We build custom websites, so you’d expect us to trash Squarespace and Wix. We won’t. They’re genuinely good tools, used by millions of businesses, and for some of those businesses they’re the right call. The honest comparison isn’t “template bad, custom good” — it’s about matching the tool to the job.
What the builders are good at
Squarespace and Wix do real things well:
- You’re live fast. Pick a template, add your content, publish. Days, not weeks.
- Low upfront cost. A monthly subscription instead of a project fee.
- You can edit it yourself without calling anyone — change your hours, swap a photo, add a page.
- The basics are handled — hosting, security updates, SSL, a mobile layout, all included.
If your website’s job is mainly to exist — a tidy place that confirms you’re real, lists what you do, and shows your hours — a builder does that competently and cheaply. There’s no shame in that being enough.
Where the builders quietly cost you
The trouble starts when your website has a harder job: competing for customers, ranking locally, and making people choose you over the business down the road. That’s where the template model shows its limits.
- You look like everyone else. Templates are shared by millions. In a competitive market, sameness is invisibility.
- You become the designer. Every layout, crop, and spacing decision is yours now — and design is a skill, not a slider.
- SEO has a ceiling. You can do the basics, but the structured data, performance, and technical SEO that move local rankings are largely out of your hands.
- Speed is capped. Builders carry a lot of overhead code. A hand-built site on a modern edge network loads in under a second; a loaded template often doesn’t — and speed affects both rankings and whether visitors stay.
- The time cost is invisible. “Free to build yourself” usually means thirty hours of your evenings. Your time isn’t free.
What a custom build actually changes
A custom site isn’t just a prettier template. The difference is that every decision is made for your business instead of inherited from a theme:
- Design built around your brand and your customers, so you don’t look like the other ten businesses on the same template
- Local SEO, structured data, and Google Business Profile alignment done properly from day one
- Genuinely fast — built lean, served from the edge
- A real person who knows your project when something needs to change
The trade-off is honest: it costs more upfront and takes longer than dragging blocks around on a Saturday. You’re paying for judgement and craft, not just a tool.
The question that decides it
Skip the feature comparisons. Ask one thing:
Does my website have a job beyond existing?
- No — it just needs to be there. A builder is a perfectly sensible, cheap choice. Use one and get on with your business.
- Yes — it needs to bring me customers and out-compete the business next door. A template will hold you back, and a custom build will earn its cost.
Most businesses sit somewhere on that line and know, honestly, which side they’re on.
Our take
We don’t build templates — not because they’re bad, but because the businesses we work with have hired us precisely because they’re tired of looking like everyone else. If that’s not your problem, save your money and use Squarespace. If it is, that’s exactly the problem we solve.
